SRI

SRI International (SRI) is an American nonprofit research institute headquartered in Menlo Park, California. The trustees of Stanford University established SRI in 1946 as a center of innovation to support economic development in the region. The organization was founded as the Stanford Research Institute. SRI formally separated from Stanford University in 1970 and became known as SRI International in 1977. SRI describes its mission as creating world-changing solutions to make people safer, healthier, and more productive.[1] It performs client-sponsored research and development for government agencies, commercial businesses, and private foundations. It also licenses its technologies,[2] forms strategic partnerships, sells products,[3] and creates spin-off companies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRI_International

Tim Bray does a reality-check on Web Services/SOA standards complexity. So, if you believed in history, where would you look for the future of "Web Services?" You'd look at the people who are doing them in a rough-and-ready fashion out there on the Net. The names that come to my mind are Amazon, Google, EBay, SalesforceCom, maybe SABRE. Whatever they're doing, that's Web Services or SOA or the Services Fabric or whatever you want to call it. Anything they don't need, maybe it isn't going to be real important. (Worse Is Better)

Arnold Kling on (Andy Kessler's article on) Self Publishing. I finished writing it on Jan. 31, 2003. The Web helped me find everything else I needed. In February, I had it edited by two women in Texas, while a couple in Florida put together the cover, dropping in a Jeff Danziger illustration. ISBN numbers, bar codes, Bowker databases and Library of Congress numbers, no sweat. I found a printer near Boston that could turn out thousands of copies in two weeks. A printer in Michigan took four weeks but, for two bucks each, produced tens of thousands of stitched-binding, store-quality copies. Ready or not, I was now in the publishing business. I opened an Advantage account on Amazon.com and had "Wall Street Meat" for sale on March 17. This is about the book Wall Street Meat ISBN:0972783210. (more)
